Summary

This highly detailed carving shows a king and a bishop, representing St John of Beverley and King Athelstan.

An account of John's miracles written about 1100 includes a story that King Athelstan came to pray at St John's shrine in 934. He was on his way to fight the Scots and he promised that if St John helped him win he would come back and offer his thanks. He did return and gave a gift of a silver dagger and the right of sanctuary for the town.
