Our Sanctuary Trail begins with an exhibition area in the North Transept. It is in the form of a tent, similar in style to the IKEA® tents supplied to refugee camps around the world. Here you can explore Beverley's close connection to sanctuary and discover more about what sanctuary means today.
The interactive touchscreen in the exhibition area introduces some of the medieval sanctuary-seekers mentioned in the Sanctuary Book pages, which recorded details of everyone who sought sanctuary at Beverley. Filmed dramatisations using local actors bring to life some of the stories detailing in the Sanctuary Book.
Also available are filmed interviews with modern-day sanctuary-seekers living in East Yorkshire, which provide insight into the reasons why sanctuary remains an important concept today.
