Videos: Medieval Sanctuary Seekers

The names and crimes of Beverley's later medieval sanctuary seekers were recorded by the church court. Some of these entries survive in a register, known as the 'Sanctuary Book', which covers the period 1478-1539 and is now kept in the British Library.

The films below are dramatisations, created as part of the Sanctuary project in 2020/21, that explore the stories of some of those recorded in the Sanctuary Book. Meet Sir John Holland, an aristocratic murderer, Clerk John Wright and a lot of people called William!

More films are available on the touchscreens at Beverley Minster.
